Placebo Effect

By Miles Ashbourne

Two men. One buried truth. And a pharmaceutical empire willing to kill to keep it that way.

Dr. Rhys Morgan is invisible by design. A meticulous data verification analyst at Aethelgard Pharmaceuticals, he finds comfort in order, in numbers that behave, in a world small enough to control. But on the morning of Solace's triumphant launch, a single yellow flag in the clinical trial data cracks everything open. Six patients. Deleted. Rhys follows the thread — and discovers that the miracle drug about to reach millions is built on a foundation of buried bodies and deliberate lies.

Finn is the journalist nobody sends a polished press release to. Cynical, relentless, and running on bad whiskey and a grudge against corporations that kill people and call it progress, he receives an encrypted tip from a frightened scientist with nothing left to lose. Their meeting in a dive bar smelling of stale beer and bad decisions is combative, electric, and entirely unavoidable. A paranoid researcher and a burned-out investigator — oil and water, until the fire starts.

Aethelgard fights back with surgical precision: fabricated psych evaluations, police raids, legal threats carrying nine-figure price tags, and men in black SUVs who don't take no for an answer. Rhys and Finn are stripped of credentials, evidence, and allies one by one — forced into cheap motels, stolen data runs, and a desperate cross-country drive to find the one witness who can prove the fraud was intentional. Seventy-three people died in clinical trials. More are dying now.

Somewhere between the fence-climbing and the fire alarms and the cold motel rooms where survival feels closer than morning, the professional distance between them dissolves into something neither man planned for. Rhys made his career trusting data. Finn stopped trusting anything years ago. But this — whatever this is — defies every calculation. The question isn't whether they can bring down a billion-dollar empire. It's whether two men defined by their solitude can choose each other when the smoke finally clears.

A forced-proximity whistleblower MM romance featuring corporate conspiracy, morally grey decisions, and two broken men finding each other in the wreckage.
