CIPHERED HEARTS CHRONICLES • BOOK 4
Shadow Waltz in Berlin
By Leo Vescari
In the gilded halls of the Nazi Reich, one man plays music to survive — the other listens for secrets that could end the war. Neither expects the most dangerous thing they'll find is each other.
Felix Hartmann performs for monsters. A classically trained violinist navigating wartime Berlin's treacherous cultural circuit, he fills elegant ballrooms with Schubert while officers plot atrocities over rationed delicacies. His violin case is his only armor, his artistry his only shield — but with banned composers' scores outlawed and Gestapo surveillance tightening, Felix knows that in the Reich, even beauty can become a confession.
When Swedish diplomat Janos Lindgren attends one of Felix's performances, their eyes meet across a room full of uniforms and ideology — and something electric passes between them that has nothing to do with Schubert. Janos is neutral by profession but not by conscience, quietly feeding intelligence to the Allies through Stockholm's careful diplomatic channels. He needs a source inside Germany's military social world. Felix, bowing nightly before Luftwaffe colonels with loose tongues, is perfect.
What begins as a recruitment becomes something neither man planned for. As Felix encodes Wehrmacht convoy schedules into sonatas and passes coded compositions through Swedish diplomatic pouches, the noose tightens. Gestapo Sturmbannführer Vogel is closing in. A beloved colleague is arrested. Paragraph 175 hangs over them both like a death warrant. Every meeting could be their last.
But beneath the tradecraft and the terror, something irreversible is happening. Two men — one performing loyalty to a regime he despises, the other sacrificing his career for a man he was only supposed to recruit — are falling desperately, recklessly in love in a city that would execute them for it.
Some secrets are written in music. Some are written on the heart.
A slow-burn, forced-proximity historical MM romance set in WWII Berlin, featuring espionage, coded symphonies, and love forged under impossible odds.
